He appeared in golden-age Hollywood classics like 1953s Stalag 17 and 1955s Night of the Hunter as well as a host of genre movies through the years, lending an air of seriousness to even the most trivial roles. Born Peter Aurness in Minneapolis, he served in the U.S. Air Force in 1944-45, studied drama at the University of Minnesota, and then followed his older brother, Gunsmoke star James Arness, to Hollywood. As Lesley Stahl looks on and makes requests, as if sitting next to a Billy Joel type piano man in a dark lounge, Paravicini seamlessly and effortlessly transitions between classical, pop, and show tunes.

Not only, in fact, is Paravicini able to play any piece of music that he’s ever heard, he’s able to play them in any number of different styles, taking a show tune, for example, and playing it in a jazz style and back again as if he is simply changing the stations on a television.

Asked, however, to take his hands off of the piano and raise three fingers for the camera, Paravicini awkwardly raises both hands and seems lost.

The juxtaposition of Paravicini’s awkward social interactions and his beautiful piano expression is as striking as anything you will ever watch; it will, quite easily put a lump in your throat.

The condition of savant syndrome, sadly, most often does not come with ability as extraordinary as Paravicini’s. As with most human conditions, the vast majority of people fitting into the savant category do not demonstrate this type of special talent. Though the signs of extraordinary ability are often there, they are far more subtle.

According to the Savant Academy, an organization dedicated to helping people with Savant Syndrome, there are probably no more than fifty people in the world today who possess the sort of talent that Paravicini does.

Its website states, “Savants may demonstrate, for example, an ability to recite pages of text on a single hearing, to multiply six-digit numbers in their head, or to memorize and perform any song played for them just once. The 1988 film “Rain Man” introduced the concept of an autistic savant to a wider audience. Such prodigious savants are extremely rare.”

The Midwest
I lied when I said we dont flog the Tournament Committee here. What the hell do these folks have against Kansas? Im calling Missouri styled consipiracy shenanigans here.

This region is by far the toughest of the four which is a horrible miscarriage of March Madness justice considering the Jayhawks are the consensus number one team in the country. The committee did the Jayhawks no favors by placing the best number 3 and the best number 2 seed in the same bracket. UNLV in the second round and a third round matchup vs. Maryland or Michigan State is no cake walk either.

When you have a bracket on steroids, the seedings should hold true to form with the heavy weights taking care of business down the line. Ohio State vs. Georgetown as a sweet sixteen game and then a potential Buckeye vs Jayhawk clash of titans in the elite eight should be epic and too soon as far as Im concerned. These are final four caliber games.

The West
This region is as bad as the Midwest is good. I cant remember a weaker bracket especially if Arinze Onuaku isnt 100 percent. Pitt is the weakest three seed while Kansas State hasnt really beaten a big time program this season. Hell, Id argue that KSU is the weakest two seed. Frankly, the Orangemen were treated like the number one overall seed.

In the other half of the bracket, watch for UTEP as the 12 seed and BYU as a 7 to make some noise. If the Orangmen are knocked out early, there are no less than six or seven teams in this region that have a chance to get to the final four.

Congratulations to Syracuse for getting Kansas bracket.

The South
In terms of style of play, this region is top to bottom the least physical and most perimeter oriented in nature which gives the teams with solid inside presence a competitive advantage.

For that reason, I think Big 12 teams Baylor and Texas A&M can really make some hay if they can control tempo. The Aggies play defense well enough to accomplish tempo related goals and Baylor has the guard play to control pace.

The Aggies should beat a hapless Purdue squad something along the lines of 38 to 28, and then move on to face the Blue Devils if Coach Ks group catches the Dr. Jekyl version of Louisville. If the Devils play the Cardinal team that shows up for Syracuse, Duke could be in for a long second round matchup. Provided the Devils advance, a game against the Texas A&M Aggies should be an intriguing one because the Aggies guard really well and have an interior presence to punish Duke in the paint and on the glass.

At first glance, I like Baylor to make a run in the bottom half of the bracket. The 3 seeded Bears and their zone are a bad matchup for a Notre Dame club that tries to backcut teams to death to manufacture offense. If the Bears meet up with Villanova in the sweet sixteen, Ill take Baylor because the Wildcats have no answer for Acy, Lomers, and especially Udoh inside. Baylor and their zone can beat Duke as well.

The East
Kentucky has a cakewalk to the elite eight. Texas and Wake are too schizophrenic to pose any threat to the Wildcats in the second round. Texas doesnt have the personnel to stay in front of one elite ballhandler much less two. Wall and Bledsoe should have their way with Texas if the Longhorns sneak past a weak Wake squad who doesnt belong in the tournament anyway.

UKs sweet sixteen matchup may very well be against the 12th seeded Cornell Big Red. Temple plays a slow down style that is right in Cornells wheelhouse. Ditto for Wisconsin, who happens to be the weakest 4 seed in my mind. Teams that dont have terrific guard play and struggle to score are beatable every night in the tournament and the Badgers are no different. Cornell doesnt have a problem scoring and manufacturing points in the halfcourt with superstar Ryann Wittman who can carry Cornell past teams that will want to play halfcourt to halfcourt games. Cornells seven footer Jeff Foote is a presence inside as well, making teams defend inside to out.

On the bottom side of the bracket, Marquette as the 6 seed can shoot their way past New Mexico on the way to the sweet sixteen.

Clemson vs. Missouri will test the you should always press a pressing team theory in and interesting first round battle of the fullcourt press.

Ultimately this is West Virginias bracket to lose because theyre going guard, bump, and grind opponents into submission. Simply put their the most physical, athletic squad in the region.

In a possible elite eight game, a Duke vs. West Virginia matchup is a horrible one for Duke when you consider the Mountaineers put four long athletes on the floor that can handle Dukes 3 headed perimeter monster by either head up man to man or implementing some screen switching . On offense, the Mountaineers will simply play volleyball on the glass until they get the rock into the cup.

Those are my initial thoughts. Ill have detailed analysis on the four regions in the next two days as well as final four and championship predictions.

The Madness has begun in earnest. Lets have some fun.

The Cleveland Browns have traded Brady Quinn to the Denver Broncos for Peyton Hillis, a 2011 sixth-round pick and a conditional late-round pick in 2012. Quinn, the former 22nd pick, will not be guaranteed anything with the Broncos, but coach Josh McDaniels has a good track record of coaching QBs. He has coached Tom Brady, Matt Cassell and helped Kyle Orton have a surprisingly good year last season. For the Browns, they get a good fullback-running back in Hillis and can move on from Quinn.

There’s little drama at the top, with Syracuse, Kansas, Kentucky and Duke all but locks for the four No. 1 seeds, but for teams on the bubble the final hours of anticipation are about to give way to the make-or-break moment.

CBS has historically had cameras in rooms containing bubble teams, and the emotional reaction – either way – as the brackets are unveiled is always must-see TV.

The four regions tend to be based geographically around the respective No. 1 seeds, setting up situations where the highest seeded teams don’t have to travel a significant distance until the Sweet 16 at the earliest. Sometimes teams can avoid a long road trip until the Final Four.

But, as usual, the tournament isn’t about the No. 1 seeds so much as the 60 others trying to upset them. This year’s bracket will feature many upset-minded upstarts looking to make a mark in the big dance. Teams like Pittsburgh and Villanova are always dangerous, and West Virginia – which outperformed both to win the Big East Tournament yesterday – is riding an emotional wave down the stretch.

But there’s always a mid-major or two that makes a run, save for last season when nothing of interest happened with smaller-market teams. But only a few years ago, George Mason rolled all the way into the Final Four, and Davidson rode the sharpshooting efforts of Stephen Curry deep into the field just two springs ago.

Anyway, grab a pen and some paper at 6 pm, when the Selection Sunday show kicks off and the 2010 NCAA basketball tournament bracket is unveiled on CBS.
